WE KNOW WHAT'S GROWING ON!!

Welcome to the first email newsletter from the Karori Garden Centre!

This newsletter will provide information about our latest plants and the most up to date products, all designed to help your garden look its best.

We’ll also have lots of gardening tips and advice based on our personal experience, built up over the years of running the garden centre, and of course working in our own gardens!

In this edition:

WHAT'S GROWING ON...

Beyond Buxus: The best examples of the new fashion for trimming evergreen shrubs into mounded and other topiaried forms can be seen among our own NZ plants such as Corokia, Sophora (kowhai), coprosma and totara. There are several different examples in the Garden Centre at present, so come in and have a look.

Tip: If you are planning a whole grouping of ‘mounds’ try using several different plants with similar foliage tones. This helps add texture and interest.

Green foliage: Pittosporum Mountain Green, Buxus sempervirens and Lonicera nitida.
Silver foliage: Corokia Silver Ghost, Santolina (cotton lavender) and Teucrium fruiticans
Bronze Foliage: Corokia Frosted Chocolate, Coprosma Cuppucino,
Syzigium australe.

TAKE TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES!

Rose Graham Thomas (pictured) is a heavenly yellow English Rose. It's one of our favourites with a great scent and a lovely old-fashioned form. We have plenty of healthy looking bushes in store now.

We recommend you feed your roses with Burnett’s Gold Rose Fertiliser, a top quality slow release fertiliser which is best suited to pots and garden beds. Burnett’s Gold lasts well and is economical, feeding up to 40 roses from one pot.

Spraying: Our experience is that the insecticide Confidor has a long lasting effect in helping to keep the aphids down. Within the garden environment Confidor acts only on the sucking insects, leaving beneficial predators alone and assisting in correcting that all important balance in the garden. For a complete rose spray, you can also combine Confidor with Yates’ Fungus & Mildew Spray.

Tip: If you have less than five roses to spray come and get a can ready mixed Bayer Rose & Ornamental Spray, a combination aerosol that you can use in 5 minutes!

ORGANIC COMPOST - MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR GARDEN SOIL
Not all of us have the room for a working composting area. Our soils are generally light in organic matter and tend to be predominantly clay based. To make the most of your garden the soil must be regularly treated to liberal doses of good compost twice a year.

Our main supplier, Tui, makes really great organic compost in 50 litre bags for $9.95. To get even better results in soil texture, add Tui Garden Galore sheep pellets or talk to us about the really good results you can get by using Gypsum and organic Nu Fert.

Tip: 2/3 soil, 1/3 plants for a great garden..
