Labour
Weekend is nearly here!
LABOUR WEEKEND
is coming up, so you’ll have the chance
to spend a bit of extra time in the garden.
Here are just a few ideas to keep you busy!
If you’re a bit of a Gourmet now is
the time to plant:
- Tomatoes – All
the classic names are now available –
check out Flavorich, one of the yummy new
varieties. If you want to have some interesting
flavours (and shapes), Heirloom tomatoes
with names like ‘Big Rainbow, ‘Garden
Peach’ ‘Lime green Salad’
and ‘Mortgage Lifter’ are among
over 20 varieties on offer.
Check out our ‘Tomato Tumbler’
hanging baskets for great presents around
Christmas. For best results use a couple
of Jobes Fertiliser spikes per plant every
8 weeks.
- Lettuces – Mesclun
salad mixes, Rocket and favourites such
as Buttercrunch are all in the Garden Centre
now, available by seed or in punnets. It
is a fact that home-grown lettuce really
does taste best!
- Strawberries –
Fairly new to the market, ‘Strawberry
Sundae’ is a very vigorous grower,
great for containers and has that good old
fashioned flavour. It will crop twice in
a warm spot and is really disease resistant.
- Herbs – We find
the easiest herbs to grow in Wellington
are coriander, mint, basil, Italian parsley
and French tarragon. Grow them in a pot
outside the back door, or in the garden,
water regularly and dose them once a week
with a liquid fertiliser to promote leafy
growth.
Of course, before you begin sowing or planting,
you need to make sure that your soil is in
good condition and valuable nutrients have
been replenished. When digging over your soil
remember to add compost, Tui Garden Galore
(sheep pellets) and Nitrophoska Blue.
BEST GARDENING
TIPS
Mulch – so important
for improving the health of your soil. It’s
vital for moisture retention, but did you
know it also helps keep your soil cooler in
summer and warmer in winter! Come in and get
Dalton’s Mega Mulch, a premium product
containing an agent to improve water penetration.
Protect plants with Eco mats
– ideal for keeping in moisture during
dry weather. Made from a bi-product of wool
processing, they retain many natural oils,
so are ideal for locking in water. Just wrap
around the base of your plant (remember to
water first to maximise moisture retention).
Make spraying easier -
New from Yates, Rose Spray and Fungus Gun
in a trigger bottle all ready to grab and
whip out and deal to those nasties.
