Still a Great Planting Time!

Your garden is still enjoying the roller-coaster of recent weather which creates the perfect environment for new plants. They’ll romp away when spring arrives!

In our last issue we talked about how to plant a shrub and thought it was worthwhile repeating it here for you.

  • Soak the plant in a bucket of water until the bubbles cease to rise.
  • After digging the hole throw in 2/3 Gro-tabs before placing the root-ball on top.
  • Always remember to incorporate some good quality compost through sandy or clay soils when you plant.
  • Fill the hole with soil and remember to firm around the plant with a good heavy foot! (This is a really important aspect as it helps hold your plant upright when the next southerly blows through!
  • Water the plant and surrounding soil deeply – Wellington’s weather is so unpredictable – we can have long dry spells even in early winter.
  • Pamper the plant with an eco-wool mat!

What's New?

A very select choice of camellias with charming flowers, glossy dark green foliage and other interesting characteristics such as scent, long flowering periods – quite a few appear less susceptible to the dreaded petal blight!

An amazing group of shrubs we have been able to bring in at fantastic prices! Check out our new range of $7, $10 and $15.00 trees and shrubs! (Available from Easter). This includes the new best thing in topiary – Pittosporum ‘Sumo’.

Bulbs: Tulips in the wildest colours; plenty of tall medium and dwarf growing varieties. If you’re gardening with kids this Easter it’s the right time to start a hyacinth in a jar with them. We’ve got a great fact sheet to start them off!

Time to....

Sow: Broad Beans, Spring Onions, Chinese Snow Peas (they taste 100 times better than the ones you buy)! Sweet Peas: Our favourite varieties are Blue Reflections and Old-fashioned. Lovers of red flowers should sow Flanders Poppies for a brilliant spring display.
Plant: Polyanthus, (use a little Dried Blood – it’s the best thing to encourage bright flowers), primulas and groundcover cyclamen.
Lawns: Still time to treat porina caterpillar and grass grub.
Tools: Don't forget to drop your hedging shears, loppers and secateurs into us for sharpening!

Stop Press!

Specimen Plants: Huge NZ Tree Ferns, big funky Hollywood Junipers and glowing Maples!

Did you know: we can supply big specimen trees to you for that instant effect at very reasonable prices?
