Spring
into September with Magnificent Magnolias!
Every year I
wait with baited breath for the first blooms
to appear on the aged Magnolia campbellii
in the Botanic Gardens. They never fail to
arrive on time in the second half of July
and for a couple of weeks the huge tree is
clothed with large pink and white blooms.
What a sight!
Most of our gardens can't accommodate this
beauty but it is really worth going to see
them flowering on the main path to the duck
pond.
Luckily, there are many varieties suitable
for our smaller gardens. Each year we have
some beautiful ones available for you to choose
from that will thrive in our conditions.
This year we have the pure white form of
Magnolia campbellii, M. camp ‘Alba’.
This will make a fabulous specimen tree growing
to about 6 metres.
One of the most beautiful is the Yulan
magnolia, M. denudata. Buddhist monks
have grown it for nearly 1500 years to adorn
their temples. The flowers are simple, elegant
and pure. The name refers to the plant flowering
on the bare stems which must have been unusual
when it was first introduced to Britain in
1780.
The easiest to accommodate are the Star
Magnolias. They are also one of the
most tolerant to wind because of their smaller
leaves and low, dense habit. They are in bloom
now and we have both the Magnolia
stellata and the cultivar
‘Waterlily’.
Then of course there are the wonderful red/purple
varieties – ‘Red As’,
‘Rustica Rubra’, liliflora, ‘Genie’
and ‘Royal Purple’.
We also have the bright yellow ‘Butterflies’
which is the darkest of the yellows and the
softer ‘Sayonara’.
And for a spectacular pink take a look at
‘Sweetheart’.
It is just so over the top!
Come and see what we have - we'd love to
show them to you and help with your selection
and planting requirements.
